Rosario described by Roberto Fontanarrosa

"We are creative people. In absence of wonderful landscapes, Rosario has beautiful women and good football. What else an intellectual might ask for? That’s my answer each time I’m asked why I live in Rosario, a fact that I don’t find so curious: one million two hundred thousand people have taken the same decision.

In short, Rosario is like a smaller Buenos Aires. Fortunately, much smaller and with far fewer people. And I must confess that, like many other “rosarinos”, I selfishly hope that we’ll never be millions of people. Actually, nobody could have ever explained to me what the advantage of being many people is. Where lies the benefit of being like –exaggerating– São Paulo or Mexico City?.

Rosario is a city made by immigrants, sharply Italian in its style, more tango than folklore-styled, more merchant than colonial, that pursues its identity and profile through what it does and what it produces. But for sure, sometimes the proximity to Buenos Aires makes us look like that city.

Rosario is a city of creative people, my friends. For some reason Manuel Belgrano chose Rosario to create the Argentinian flag."

"Introducing Rosario" by Lonely Planet Guides

"The boom times are back for Rosario, birthplace of both the Argentine flag and ‘Che’ Guevara, and an important riverport. The derelict buildings of the long costanera have been converted into galleries, restaurants and skate parks, and the river beaches and islands buzz with life in summer. The center – a curious mishmash of stunning early-20th-century buildings overshadowed by ugly apartments – has a comfortable, lived-in feel, and the down-to-earth rosarinos (people from Rosario) are a delight. All are very proud of the city’s current claim to fame: Lionel Messi, a golden boy of world soccer, is Rosario born and bred." Lonely Planet Guides.

So, why Rosario?

Rosario, known as “La Cuna de la Bandera” (“The cradle of the flag”), is a cosmopolitan and radiant city located at the south of Santa Fe province. It’s the most important center of rural, industrial and commercial activity in the region and the second largest city in Argentina. Eminently a cultural city, Rosario offers architecture, museums, parks and an intense agenda of concerts, exhibitions and theatre plays. It’s an interesting fact that Rosario is one of the few Argentine cities that does not have a founder. It is not the result of an official initiative, or a colonization policy or strategic defence. Our city was established and grew up spontaneously around a chapel dedicated to the “Virgen del Rosario” (“Our Lady Of Rosary”).

Rosario is the city where General Manuel Belgrano organized the batteries Independencia and Libertad that took part in the fight for the independence from Spain by the Paraná River. One of Argentina’s most important forefathers, Belgrano designed and raised the Argentine flag for the first time in the history of our country on February 1812 at the exact location where nowadays is placed the “Monumento Nacional a la Bandera” (Flag Memorial), what is definitely an icon of our city together with the spectacular Parana river and its islands.

Rosario offers culture, entertainment and outdoor life in a quiet and at the same time dynamic style. The mix of small town with cosmopolitan city produces a fascinating atmosphere that definitely conquers the heart of every person that visits Rosario.

And why learning Spanish in Rosario?

Hurry up: the international tourism is still not entirely aware of Rosario. You do need to speak Spanish in Rosario! In Buenos Aires you end up speaking English in many communicative situations because that city is plenty of tourists. In Rosario, you'll have the invaluable opportunity to practice Spanish in real communicative situations with local people. But don’t worry, us "rosarinos" are nice people and we’ll be patient with you.

Interesting mix of quiet, dynamic and safe city: Being so much smaller than Buenos Aires, Rosario offers a unique combination of a quiet atmosphere with dynamic and young style apart from being so much safer than the capital of the country.

Shorter distances and good transportation: In Rosario, as maximum you’ll get to anyplace in 30 minutes…walking. In most of the situations you’ll be able to reach any point of the city by bus or taxi in just 10 or 15 minutes.

Strategic location to use as a base of your trips: Rosario is greatly located for those that want to make short trips during the weekend. From Rosario you can travel in just a few hours to Buenos Aires, Cordoba, Victoria and even cross the border and travel to Uruguay, Paraguay and Brazil.

Entertainment and Culture: Rosario is definitely the best choice for those that want to enjoy a complete cultural and night life agenda. With its unique dynamic and young style, Rosario offers all the options you can imagine (and more) to make your stay in our city an unforgettable experience.

The Parana River and its islands: Rosario is located on the banks of the Parana River, the second most important river in America. The city offers many bars, restaurants and beaches by the banks of our wonderful river.  In summer, spring, autumn and winter, Rosario, its river and the islands are a great option to enjoy an amazing city with vibrant nature.

Rosario is cheaper than Buenos Aires: Finally, but not less important, cost of living in Rosario is substantially lower than in Buenos Aires. If you compare rent and prices in bars, restaurants and food in general (for same quality), you can see that prices in Rosario are in most of the cases up to 30-40% lower than in the capital of our country.
